Hi Sharon Anne, the Grippers Dog Socks (link in the article above) are great... and so are your basic, non-slip baby socks, if you can find a size that fits your dog. Make sure they are non-slip, though! I used a strip of velcro to hold the sock onto my dog's paws - wrap it snugly, but not too tightly, just above the wide part of his paw. Socks should be taken off every night, to give your dog a break.

Want to thank you for writing this information. There is a lot of info out there on the stages of DM- but this is the first site which helps support the owners struggling with assisting their companions, and making decisions. My dog seems to be in the mid-to-late stages of DM (drags his feet, struggles to stand, can't control his bowels-although urinary function is fine). This has been extremely hard to deal with, because Judge (70lb coonhound treeing walker) is the same dog up front- and there is no specific timeline telling us when this will escalate further. As the primary person caring for him, I feel guilty getting frustrated and exhausted- but this is a condition which is very hard to deal with. So overall, I am grateful you have taken the time to offer these resources, thank you for your help.

Aminocaproic acid and NAC are not proven treatments but when my baby (80 lb GSD I raised from birth) began dragging her feet in 09 and my sister (breeder 40 yrs )said I had about a yr left with her I started researching. I spent the next 11 yrs reading everything I could on the subject.Thru trial and error I got to what works for Hanna and absolutely those two are essential. In 2016 she could no longer walk without a rear harness I increased the dosage, added 11 supplements and changed her diet. This year 2020 she turns 17. This summer she got wheels and again loves running on the beach. She can still stand for short periods and can only do 10 "squats" now but when we head out she does the first 50' or so with me just balancing her. I know I wouldn't still have her if I waited for everything to be proven.

I have a 13yr old boxer that I am struggling with right now he seems to be in the intermediate stages dragging the leg sometimes he can’t walk and we are carrying him up all steps at this point I want to do the best for him and not give up on him. At what point do u think it’s best to put him to sleep. I started socks because he is to the point of his foot is beginning to have sores on it. I’m scared I will put him to sleep to soon and cheat him out of his time with me

Sorry for you and your furry friend, my dog was diagnosed two days ago. I am getting booties and carrying harness, my guy, a 11 year old German Shepherd can still stand up and walk short distances. I am thinking about using a muscle stimulator for his hind legs. Probably get the medication when the test results come in.

As many others have done, I echo the comments about how caring you are as a person to your dog and how many people you will help by going through the steps in a methodical way. My sister has an 9 year old bernese mountain dog, weighing about 150 pounds. He is near the end of the second stage and luckily, he has accepted a harness after many attempts and the two handled one you suggest is the best one. I have come to help her when she is gone on a trip and I see this dog's fight in his eyes to keep moving and living. He loves the human interaction and the attention. I often sit outside next to him giving him a full body massage while talking to him. So little is known about this condition, you have given me so many good ideas. I really like your information about transporting dogs with this condition. Thank you so much.

Hi Carol,

I just read your post or I would have answered sooner. I have an 8 year old male German Shepherd who has had DM for nearly a year. Kuuma can barely walk now, and I'm about to get him a wheel chair. I have been giving him MANY supplements including the ones you mentioned. Look up the "Deanna Protocol" on-line----it is a long list of things including many amino acids and other supplements, dietary suggestions, etc. and was developed by an Orthopedic Surgeon whose daughter, Deanna, has ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease which is similar to DM. I found that the Deanna Protocol has slowed Kuuma's DM progression. Also, giving Kuuma CBD oil by mouth helps, and I also rub it into his spine. I give Kuuma vitamin B-12 injections sub-cutaneously every 2 weeks (I learned to do this and it's very easy). I hope you still have your pup and are managing as well as possible. This disease is absolutely heartbreaking.

Hi thank you so much for this article. I currently have a german shepherd who is 12 years old and loosing muscle in her hind legs and is having trouble walking. Have been getting her acupuncture and B12 shots but now the acupuncture doesn't seem to be working that much. I did see that 2 drugs that might help a dog with DM but not cure it they are aminocaproic acid (EACA) and n-acetylcysteine (NAC) has anyone heard of these two medications?

You are an amazing person. If only people had the love for one another that true dog people have for their dogs, this world would be such a better place. Thank you for the article. Fecal incontinence is my dogs main problem, tho mobility is slowly going. This disease is horrible but there is a new treatment being used successfully. I am calling Tufts tomorrow to try to get my dog on it. It won't cure it but will slow progression. It's an acid, starts with an a. If you type DM dog acid treatment into Google you'll find it. It's very promising. God bless all of you and your dogs
